Island Memories

by Bob Auletta

My earliest recollection of Bay Rum was at about the age of about eight. I spent many happy summers in the Virgin Islands. After a long day on the island of St. John, a shower at the end of the day was never appreciated more than during my frequent visits to the Knight family’s home, enjoying their gracious hospitality. I was somewhat oblivious to the reality of a shortage of water one finds on an island, growing up, as I did, in a New York suburb where hot and cold running water was just another certainty of life. After a refreshing shower, mosquitoes, sunburn, and scratches from running amuck through the island’s overgrown bush seemed a lot less annoying because Bay Rum was part of the Knight family remedy always at the ready.

As I remember, the first bottles of this life-saving liquid were purchased at one of the local bars in Cruz Bay – in a reused Heineken beer bottle, with a cork placed in it to protect the vital concoction. And this, for some reason, is the only container for Bay Rum I remember until perhaps the late 60’s, when I recall buying St. John’s Bay Rum in its famous palm weave bottle. Tourists would stock up on this well-known elixir as they disembarked from their cruise ships to relieve St. Thomas’ shops of their Duty-Free treasure. For fifty years, I have used Bay Rum every day and I can’t imagine a morning shave without it.

Years after my boyhood visits with the Knights, I purchased a piece of property, near the summit on Bordeaux Mountain close to Coral Bay, from the Marsh family who owned extensive land in the subdivision known as Estate Carolina. To my surprise, decades later, while researching Bay Rum, I would be reminded that one of the Marsh family’s business endeavors was distilling the bay oil from trees on and around Bordeaux. My life-long affair with Bay Rum now has me touting its many virtues to readers of this website.

What Is Bay Rum

WHAT IS BAY RUM?

header-about

The story of Bay Rum begins with the essential oil derived from the leaves of the bay tree growing in the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Dominica and other islands of the Caribbean. The oil, along with its aroma, is extracted from the crushed leaves by a process of distillation, boiling the leaves under pressure, then allowing the sediment to settle, leaving a pure, fragrant oil that becomes the most important ingredient in what we call Bay Rum today. Early “recipes” were born out of need. The rewards were many to those who used Bay Rum:

  • The fragrance was an effective “mask” from the odors resulting from island humidity and heat, and shipboard scarcity of fresh water. Island living, even to this day, is not complete without the use of Bay Rum.
  • Worldwide, in the past century, every barbershop, department store and pharmacy carried this product. During the past half-century, some of the “glamour” of Bay Rum has been lost to the mass marketing of other products.
  • Today the oil is often used externally in aromatherapy, and for medicinal means in cooling body temperature, treating chills, and relieving body aches. As an astringent, nothing is better at relieving the annoyance of small scratches and insect bites. And this oil is widely used in the manufacture of soaps, candles, and colognes.
  • The most widely known use of Bay Rum has been as an aftershave product – a fresh aroma without the heavy perfumes used in many of today’s products.

Despite Bay Rum’s exotic origins, our Turtle Bay after shave, fragrance, and shave creams are made right here in the United States.  We are confident that trying our Premium Bay Rum products will not only convert your senses to enjoying a more “masculine” scent, but appreciating the history of a product once produced in primitive Bay Rum stills by island-born entrepreneurs before electricity or running.
